Boardwalk Illustrated

Fans of Coney Island know that 2023 marks the centennial of the Reigelmann Boardwalk, an integral part of Coney Island’s past. There’s so much history embedded — figuratively — in these iconic wooden boards (please say NO to concrete or plastic), and we thought to share an item from the CIM’s collection that most fans will never get the opportunity examine up close. This periodical, dated 1923, was the first of several Boardwalk Illustrated publications promoting the construction of the Boardwalk. It includes some terrific photographs, charming articles, and even some period advertisements. It is an oversized piece (too big for the Museum’s scanner), and is in good condition for 100 year old printed matter.

We hope you enjoy perusing these pages from Coney Island’s past!

Please consider supporting the Coney Island Museum in our mission to preserve the rich history of the People’s Playground. Many thanks!
