<image:title>Events - Storytelling by the Seashore</image:title>
<image:caption>Join us in the Coney Island Museum for Storytelling by the Seashore, as part of the nationwide Fall of Freedom movement. Fall of Freedom is an urgent call to the arts community to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation. Our Democracy is under attack. Threats to free expression are rising. Dissent is being criminalized. Institutions and media have been recast as mouthpieces of propaganda. And speaking of mouthpieces, we have assembled New York City's best storytellers to regale us with tales of struggle, resistance, censorship and freedom! *Tickets do not ship. Will call pick up only. *The Museum is located on the second floor, and is not wheelchair-accessible at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Queer Coney Island: An Afternoon of History and Performance with Close Friends Collective - Join Close Friends Collective for an afternoon of queer history at Coney Island! We will start with a tour of queer historical sites along Surf Avenue and the Boardwalk, from the smoky rooms of Mae West and Mabel Hampton’s cabarets to the steamy rooms of Stauch’s Bathhouse. We’ll collectively imagine these now-demolished queer spaces, inviting the ghosts of the gay past back to the beach. . After the tour, we’ll head back to Coney Island USA to bring the historical vibe back to life. First, we’ll take in the world-famous Coney Island Circus Sideshow, grounded in a century of performance practice that has always been pretty queer, if you ask us. Then we’ll head up to the Coney Island Museum after it’s closed for the day. We’ll explore the collection, get lost in the funhouse mirrors, chat about the gay past and finish out with some beachy readings and a historically-informed drag show.</image:title>

<image:caption>Not even an impending nor’easter could dampen spirits on Saturday, October 11, as the Coney Island Museum and Coney Island USA celebrated the unveiling of a plaque on our building denoting its landmarked status. In attendance were State Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny, NYC Councilmember Justin Brannan, Sarah Salem representing NY Senator Jessica Scarcell-Spanton, as well as Steven Thomson of the NY Landmarks Commission, and Claire McCabe of the NY Landmarks Preservation Foundation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 1208 Surf Avenue Landmark Plaque Celebration - We were also fortunate to be able to share the event with a group of our friends from NAPHA, who were in-town for their “Fall Hip-Hop”. We couldn’t have been more surprised — or grateful — when Andrea Dreyfus presented Curator Lisa Mangels-Schaefer with NAPHA’s Heritage Award and a check for $2500 for CIUSA! These folks have been loyal and generous supporters of the CIM and CIUSA, and their mission “to preserve, document, and enjoy the amusement and theme park industry” is analogous with our own. We couldn’t be more grateful!</image:title>

<image:caption>Built in 1917 and operating until 1943, this was the first of two Childs restaurants in Coney Island. The pioneering Childs restaurant chain was established by Samuel and William Childs in 1898 with the mission to provide healthy and affordable family fare. The building was designed by the Childs in-house architect, John C. Westervelt, in the Spanish Revival style, with decorative terracotta exterior elements and the white tiled interiors that were trademarked features of the chain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Wizard of the Pike - In 2017, the CIM was gifted with two remarkable works of art, both landscapes, gouache on paper. At first glance, the subjects of these paintings looked familiar, but it was quickly realized that these were not actually depictions of Coney Island, yet somehow akin.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Wizard of the Pike - The paintings are the work of British artist Edward J. Austen (1850-1930). Described as “a man who knocked about the world”; Austen worked as a comedian in his youth ; traveled to Africa to fight in the Zulu War ; and served as an itinerant correspondent for several publications, including The World Wide Magazine, for which he wrote and illustrated a series of thrilling short stories based on his own experiences. During a stay in South Africa, he met and married an American singer / author, Frances Vescelius; together they published a number of popular children’s storybooks, including Elfie’s Visit To Cloudland.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Wizard of the Pike - Returning with his wife to America, Austen became engaged in theater productions, partnering with Steele Mackaye, renowned innovator of theater technology. Austen eventually created his own company,,Cyclorama Incorporated, which had ties to concessionaire E.W. McConnell (known as “The Panorama King”). Austen would go on to became one of the foremost painters of panoramas and cycloramas of the period. Prior to the invention of the moving picture, these paintings, sometimes installed in rotundas, offered the public the opportunity to view historic tableaus on a massive scale. One of the most celebrated of these works was The Battle of Gettysburg (1883), designed by French artist Paul Philippoteaux. Edward Austen was one of the highly skilled artists chosen to assist Philippoteaux in completing the painting. Other Austen panoramas included The Chicago Fire ; The Crucifixion ; The Falls of Niagara ; and The Custer Massacre.</image:title>

<image:caption>In 1894, Austen created a “moving cyclorama” replica of Chicago’s “White City” World’s Fair (the Columbia Exposition) which was installed at NYC’s Madison Square Garden. It was a tremendous success. But he received even more acclaim for his creation of The Johnstown Flood attraction, featured at the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. By 1904, Austen had patented his scenograph innovation, which combined cycloramic artwork with electrical and mechanical effects, producing an immersive experience for the audience. In the programme for the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Austen was billed as “The Wizard of the Pike”, and credited with the creation of three attractions: The Galveston Flood ; New York to the North Pole ; and The Battle Abbey. He would later bring The Johnstown Flood ; New York to the North Pole ; and The Great Italian Earthquake to Coney Island.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the more curious aspects of the CIM’s paintings is an inscription in the bottom left corner of the broader landscape. Listed above the artist’s name are two others ; one is “E.W. McConnell, Directing Engineer”. As mentioned earlier, McConnell (1868 -1964) was one of the most successful concessionaires of his era, as well as one of the foremost producers and collectors of panoramas and cycloramas, earning him the title, “The Panorama King”. The other name is “H. Hasenburger, Architect”. Henry Hasenburger (1886-1956) was a West Coast architect known for creating meticulous models of his design projects. Several of the homes he designed can still be found on the California Historic Register.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Marathon Man - John T. Ennis (1842-1929), was an Irish immigrant who came to America as a young man, settling first in Chicago, and later in Stamford CT. A carpenter by trade, and an avid outdoorsman, he soon developed a keen interest in a newly popularized sport — competitive walking. Originating in England, “pedestrianism” became popular in the U.S. after the Civil War. By that time, it was already a high-stakes sport in England, where fans passionately cheered for their favorite participants in both timed and long-distance endurance trials. As in modern popular sports, many of these athletes enjoyed hefty corporate sponsorships, and races were often plagued by accusations of game-fixing, cheating, and doping. Celebrity pedestrians were tagged with nicknames by their fans or detractors; some employed unusual gaits that were adopted by their followers. And although they competed separately, women “pedestriennes” were as popular as their male counterparts.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Marathon Man - American long-distance races were typically 100 mile courses. However, in 1875, British sports impresario Sir John Astley created the first six-day Long Distance Championship of the World, where competitors spent 6 days continually walking an indoor oval track (with brief “pit stops”) to win what would become the coveted “Astley Belt”. At that time, John Ennis was finding success and recognition in the US as a competitive walker, winning numerous long distance races. In 1878, he was invited by Astley to travel to England to enter the International Pedestrian Match for the World Championship. Ennis competed, but finished a disappointing fifth, at 410 miles.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Marathon Man - Despite his failure to bring the Astley Belt home to America, Ennis continued to compete in long distance pedestrian races. He was also a talented endurance ice skater; in 1876, he skated150 miles in an incredible 18:43.</image:title>

<image:caption>In 1908, John Ennis was hailed as a hero after saving two young men, Robert Carlin and Howard Lewis, from drowning in the Rippowam River in Connecticut. Lewis had broken through the ice while skating, and Carlin, who attempted to save him, had also fallen In. The sixty year old Ennis was skating on the river, and immediately rushed to aid them. Though he also fell through the ice, he was able to successfully rescue the boys. The crowd cheered Ennis. Apparently, it was the thirteenth time he had saved persons from drowning. John Ennis continued to compete and participate in outdoor activities well into his eighties.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While each of these devices operated differently, all were devised with similar intent — daring riders to navigate an erratic mechanical course. Some featured a path that was split lengthwise, with each side moving independently of the other (the Arkansas Traveler at Steeplechase, Luna Park’s Cake Walk). Others, like Luna’s Funny Stairs and the Earthquake Stairway at Steeplechase, employed steps that shook and buckled up and down. Besides being challenging (?), we have to assume that riders often walked (or limped) away sporting bruises —to more than just to their dignity!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Definitely an imaginative concept, the Whirl-Fly combined both ferris wheel and roller coaster elements into one device, but the height and insect-like stance of the car seems particularly unwieldy. This rare postcard image seems to be the only representation of the Whirl-Fly’s design, and a newspaper clipping from May 19, 1907 confirms that the ride actually existed. But for how long/? An advertisement for the “Whirl-Fly Cafe”, located in the same general vicinity, may be related to this mysterious ride, but raises more questions than it provides answers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Coney Island’s Quirky Amusements - Chilkoot Pass, aka Human Bagatelle, (1904-1907s)</image:title>
<image:caption>Dreamland’s Chilkoot Pass was situated in a classical-style structure whose main entrance resembled a proscenium arch. The ride sent passengers careening down an inclined platform in tall baskets, where they would jockey to avoid iron stanchions installed at random intervals and land in slots given a numerical value. (Bagatelle is a billiards-derived indoor table game popularized during 19th century) Riders were awarded prizes based on the value of the slot in which they’d landed. However, it’s chilling to think that Chilkoot Pass was a possible reference to the1898 avalanche disaster that killed 65 people on Alaska’s Chilkoot Trail.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Installed as part of Luna Park’s Helter Skelter slide attraction, The Scaler was one of the first commercial uses of the escalator. Developed by Jesse W. Reno in 1892, it made its debut on Coney’s old Iron Pier in 1896, where it was used to move passengers disembarking from steamboats. While the side-seating escalator may look odd to us, the technology must have been a novelty at the time. However, it’s hard to imagine that ascending on the Scaler was nearly as thrilling as coming down the Helter Skelter. <image:title>Blog - Coney Island’s Quirky Amusements - Yale & Harvard Boat Race (1909)</image:title>
<image:caption>Another creation of W.F. Mangels, the “Great” Yale-Harvard Boat race was installed in Dreamland in 1909. According to Mangels, “…It consisted of two parallel tracks on which imitation boats were operated. In front of each seat in the boats were levers which, when rocked back and forth by the riders, propelled the boats forward. The crew that worked the hardest soon won the race. In theory this was fine, but in practice it soon developed that a boatload of pleasure-seekers, accidentally coming together for the first time, cannot be depended on for the teamwork expected of a trained crew, and the races usually fizzled”. Apologies, great-grandad, but for most folks, work isn’t play. And not every concept is a winner. Excerpt, “The Outdoor Amusement Industry : From Earlier Times To the Present”; William F. Mangels; Vantage Press, 1952 Above right: W.F. Mangels catalogue, courtesy of the Mangels family</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Diaries of James Onorato - Although “diaries” suggest inside stories and lurid gossip, Onorato restricted his writing to the job at hand. However, the books do reveal much about the nature of the author — a man of faith, deeply devoted to his own family and the family whose business would shape his life for more than 50 years; hard working and committed to the success and stability of the park, as well as the safety of its staff and visitors.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Diaries of James Onorato - Onorato also included newspaper clippings with many of his entries; these provide a fascinating window into local, national, and international events of the day. And by the 1930’s, the looming threat of war in Europe was an obvious and ongoing concern.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Diaries of James Onorato - Opening plans for the Park’s 1949 season . It’s mind-boggling to note that rides were operating on the Boardwalk as early as January, February, or the beginning of March. As a point of family pride, I have to mention that at least 3 of those 4 rides were built by the W.F. Mangels Company.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Diaries of James Onorato - Sunday, September 20, 1964. This would be the final day of operations for Steeplechase Park, and as was customary, the owners, staff, and friends gathered to sing together and toll the bells. Previous end-of-season entries provide more details of the annual closing ceremony; on this day, however, Onorato keeps it short. The diaries of James Onorato don’t end here, but it seems only fitting that this post does. -LMS</image:title>

<image:caption>It’s been 150 years since Coney Island’s first carousel opened. Built by Charles Looff, and installed in 1876 at Vanderveer’s Hotel on Surf Avenue, it introduced visitors to the artistry, wonder, and magic of merry-go-rounds.</image:caption>

<image:title>Special Announcements - The CIM’S Year of the Horse - Left: Illions inside row jumper, early twentieth century</image:title>
<image:caption>Our horse originated in the Coney Island workshop of M.C. Illions, a century ago. At some point in its past, a chemical agent had been used to remove layers of paint, which separated the joints and raised the wood’s grain. It’s also missing legs, a tail, and many of the bright glass jewels that once adorned it. Still, the ravages of time and mistreatment can’t erase the beauty, grace, and hallmarks of a classic Illions horse — the arched neck, flared nostrils, exaggerated mane, and detailed trappings. A skilled restorer will make this this horse look as good — if not better — than the day it carried its first rider.</image:caption>

<image:title>Special Announcements - Say “NO” To the Proposed Coney Island Casino!</image:title>
<image:caption>You may have noticed us popping up a lot lately on social media, television, and in newspapers. That’s because Coney Island USA is currently leading the fight against the proposed casino project in Coney Island. If you’re not aware, “The Coney" poses an existential threat — to the local residents’ way of life, to the small mom and pop businesses in the neighborhood, and to the beloved landmarks that epitomize over a century of history. Rest assured, we’re not going to back down until the corrupt politicians and greedy developers finally understand that NO ONE in Coney Island wants their sleazy casino. For over forty years, Coney Island USA, South Brooklyn’s most unique non-profit cultural arts organization, has stood on the front lines of preserving and promoting the People’s Playground. We’ve worked to protect some of Coney Island’s most beloved landmarks; helped the local community rebuild after Superstorm Sandy; and give small businesses a boost each year by attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators and participants to our annual Mermaid Parade. Coney Island is who we are. We illuminate its history at the Coney Island Museum; pay tribute to its traditions with the Coney Island Circus Sideshow; and celebrate its vision at the Coney Island Film Festival. Coney Island USA has faced many challenges since the pandemic, even without the threat of a casino looming over us. Now more than ever, we need your support — to help make much-needed repairs to our 100+ year old building; to produce the annual Mermaid Parade; to fund new programming; and continue the Museum’s efforts to preserve Coney Island’s iconic past. Please consider making a donation to Coney Island USA, and help support our mission to defend the honor of American popular culture, here in the People’s Playground. Learn more about the proposed casino construction here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Special Announcements - Coney Island Carousell Horses - This early 20th century carousel horse originated from the workshop of Marcus Charles Illions, in Coney Island. Regarded as “the Michelangelo of carousel carvers”, Illions was a Russian immigrant who spent his early career working with many other carousel crafters of renown, including Looff and, perhaps most famously, W.F. Mangels. In 1908, he established his own workshop on West Eighth Street in Coney Island, where he produced his own carousels. Illions was an amazing artist, and not above carving his signature — or even his own portrait — onto his horses. His artistry can still be seen (though not ridden) at Coney Island’s B & B Carousell, which features Illion’s stunning Lincoln Centennial Horse. This Illions carousel horse is an important acquisition for the CIM, illuminating Coney Island’s history as the once carousel capital of the world, home to many of the most celebrated merry-go-rounds, artisans, and manufacturers in the industry. This horse is going to need a major restoration to return it to its former glory; we hope you’re willing to take the ride with us as we welcome this precious piece of Coney Island’s past back home!</image:title>

<image:caption>Since 2018, visitors to the CIM have had the opportunity to view this charming horse, crafted by Charles Dare (1834-1896). Dare began his career carving toys, hobbyhorses, and rocking horses, but later progressed to carousel production. At his workshop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Dare primarily produced portable carousels, his sweet-faced horses carved in the “Country Fair” style. This particular Dare horse (nicknamed “Smarty Charles” by his owner”) was originally from a track machine — the horses would move forward and back on a track as the carousel platform revolved. It was later converted into a pole-style horse. Some of the early Dare carousels had horses suspended by ropes or wires, and were called “Flying Horses”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Special Announcements - Coney Island Carousell Horses</image:title>
<image:caption>Coney Island’s first carousel was built by Charles Looff, and installed in 1876 at Vanderveer's Bathing Pavilion at West Sixth St. and Surf Avenue. Looff, a Danish immigrant, is credited with originating the “Coney Island” style of carousel carving, characterized by arched necks, dramatic poses, and elegant trappings. His workshop employed a cadre of artists and craftsmen, including M.C. Illions, Charles Carmel, Solomon Stein, and Harry Goldstein, as well as carousel innovator W.F. Mangels — all of whom would go on to create some of the most beautiful and memorable carousels in history. Looff left Coney Island in 1896, but continued to produce carousels.</image:caption>

Mangels, and can still be seen on the B & B Carousell in Coney Island.</image:caption>
